Sonia
Sonia has been working for one of our suppliers, a Fair Trade organisation in the textile industry, for 5 years. She is in her early twenties. Prior to joining the supplier, she lived at home with her family in the Indian countryside, isolated and without prospect of employment. Now, she is a well qualified employee of our supplier. She is paid a fair wage for her work, and enjoys clean working conditions, decent living accommodation and food, and is skilled in her craft. She is even able to send some money back to her family to support them.
Some of Sonia’s colleagues are deaf and dumb women, who would have little hope of employment, or of learning a trade or being able to leave their family homes to earn their own living were it not for organisations such as our supplier.
Selvi
Being deaf and dumb presents its own challenges. Selvi, who is also in her twenties, attended a deaf and dumb school in Kangarapillai and is an inspiring example of an individual’s courage to strive for and achieve independence in the face of adversity. She has now been working for our supplier for eight years and lives in accommodation provided by the supplier. One of her roles is to check samples before shipment.
By buying Fairlymade products you can help us to make a direct difference to the lives of these women and of many other workers in the developing world.
